You know those experiences that sound totally woo-woo until you try them yourself? That was my mindset before jumping into an Earth Wisdom jeep for Sedona's famous vortex tour. I mean, mysterious energy centers that make you feel all tingly? Come on. But let me tell you – this adventure turned this skeptic into someone who had the time of her life and loved the ride.
First off, if you've never heard of Sedona's vortexes (or vortices, depending who you are talking to), they are specific spots where the earth's energy is supposedly either flowing up or down with intense force. Others characterize it as male or female energy. Actually, it's not that crazy if you think about it. We accept that compasses always point north. Why? Because the Earth itself acts like a giant magnet, causing the compass needle to align with the Earth's magnetic field. Magnets, energy pulls, hmmmm.
The Native Americans have considered this land sacred for centuries, and after experiencing it firsthand, I understand why. Our guide, Scott, was this perfect blend of rugged outdoorsman and spiritual guide. As we bounced along the rust-colored trails, he explained the history of the vortices how each vortex has its' own personality, and how they all supposedly affect people differently.
At some vortices, the trees are literally twisted from growing in the energy field. Scott handed us divining rods and had us walk around for a few minutes. The rods then began to move. My syndical side would have argued that it was the wind but each rod in my right and left hand was moving in a different direction. So much for that excuse. After several minutes he asked each of us to describe what we felt. He said he always talks about how different people experience the vortices after we have each had our own impressions because he doesn’t want to color anyone's perspective.
The best part? Even if you're not into the spiritual scene, the jeep tour itself is worth every penny. The natural beauty is awe-inspiring. The landscape here is otherworldly – all rust-red spires and buttes set against that famous Arizona blue sky. There's something special about Sedona that you can't quite put your finger on. Whether it's ancient energy vortexes or just the sheer beauty of the place, it leaves you feeling different. Better, somehow. More centered.
Pro tips if you're planning your own vortex adventure:
Book early, especially during peak season
Wear layers (it can get chilly up there, even in the desert)
Bring water (lots of it)
Keep an open mind (you might surprise yourself)
Don't forget your camera (the views are insane)
Would I do it again? In a heartbeat and I will because sometimes the most memorable adventures take you a little out of your comfort zone and challenge what you think you know about the world.
